This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Indian iconography, exploring the symbolic representation of deities, mythological figures, and religious concepts through art and architecture. Students will gain insights into the evolution of iconographic traditions across different regions of India, as well as the influence of various religious and cultural practices on Indian art. Course Objectives • Understand the significance of iconography in Indian religious and cultural contexts. • Explore the different styles and forms of Indian iconography across time periods. • Analyze the iconographic representations of Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and other religious traditions in India. • Examine key temples, sculptures, paintings, and texts that have contributed to the development of Indian iconography. Module 1: Introduction to Iconography • Definition and scope of iconography • Historical evolution of Indian iconography • Role of religion and mythology in shaping Indian art forms • Key texts: Shilpa Shastras and other scriptures Module 2: Hindu Iconography • Case studies: Iconography in major Hindu temples (Khajuraho, Ellora, Meenakshi Temple) Module 3: Buddhist Iconography • Case studies: Sanchi Stupa, Ajanta Caves, Gandhara and Mathura schools Module 4: Jain Iconography Module 5: Regional Iconographic Traditions Module 6: Influence of Foreign Traditions Module 7: Iconography in Indian Paintings Module 8: Contemporary Interpretations of Indian Iconography Assignments & Activities • Weekly quizzes based on readings and lectures • Case study analysis of specific temples or sculptures • Virtual museum and temple tours • Final project: Iconographic analysis of a chosen deity or temple art Course Duration: 8 weeks Assessment • Quizzes: 20% • Assignments: 30% • Discussion Forums: 10% • Final Project: 40% Target Audience This course is designed for students, scholars, art enthusiasts, and anyone interested in Indian culture and religious art.
